Newly Designed packaging, and with Recycled materials too!

Saturday, January 10, 2009

From a marketing perspective, good packaging is essential. From an Environmental perspective, packaging using Recycled materials is even better!

I was pretty happy with my ATM pocket packaging, seeing as I had it in a cute little white candy, window box (shown to your left), but I wasn't really happy paying more than I should per box, and supporting China to boot. So, one day, while eating my cereal, I was admiring the really nice thin, but durable cardboard that is used for the cereal box and thought that we throw away those boxes all the time and there is something good there.

I went to sleep that night, and like most nights, while trying to sleep, I think of a fun design where I could use this material and make it look professional too.

The next morning I came up with a flat type pillow box, with a window, and a button sewn on for the tie on. The first one actually turned out great, but I had to figure out the easiest and most efficient way to produce these to make it all worthwhile.

I decided to buy a circle cutter for the window shape, use recycled clear celo sheets for the window itself, small, left over pieces of my embroidery thread, and my own stash of vintage buttons for the closure.

I also bought a custom made stamp on Etsy through www.terbearco.etsy.com, that says I made it with recycled materials.

Costs:
$19.99 for the cutter, minus Michael's 40% off coupon, so about $13, $15 for the stamp (reusable too), and the cereal boxes are no extra cost since I love cereal and we always are buying it anyways. Plus, I've moved onto pizza boxes, crackers....

(Note: pic of the new pacakging, shown below has a square window, which was the original design, the new one will have a smaller, round window)

Let me know what you think and feel free to comment.

Cheers!
Jeyn
