Since I've never been very good at following instructions, I would always have a hard time sewing from a pattern. All those lines and marks, in Home Ec. class, I'd just end up cutting the biggest line on the pattern and hoped for the best.
Many years back, I followed that idea when I had to make a costume for my video store job and took a childs, flea market- bought pink dinosaur costume, took it apart, and cut new fabric but in larger sized pieces to fit my size and poof! I was a pink dinosaur with a huge tail. It turned out great and I was pretty proud of myself.
Now, having a baby, I decided to order a diaper bag off Etsy, but as beautifully designed and well made it was, it was surprisingly smaller than I expected. I thought that with all the blankets, extra outfits, diapers, etc, and my own purse stuff, that I need something bigger. So, I took the diaper bag I bought and took it apart (in my mind this time--not that dumb to ruin a perfectly good bag), and then I made my own bag.
I love it! it came out pretty sturdy and VERY big! maybe even bigger than I expected, but it serves well for me. I even added an outside elastic pocket for easy grab stuff (something I saw was missing from most Etsian's diaper bags). And, to add stability to the base and to allow the bag to stand on its own, I cleverly took a card board and sewed the fabric around it, then stuffed it at the bottom of the bag.
